The Secret Place
When I think of the secret place, I think of the scripture Psalm 91. A lot of people know this verse and they have even memorized it, they have highlighted it, circled it and even underlined it in their bibles. They have bought it on wooden signs to hang around their house and office & they have bought cards to send to their loved ones who are away in the military or to friends and family who are sick in the hospital. Christians have done so many things with this verse. I have been known to even Declare and Decree this verse over people for protection.
It is probably one of the most memorized Psalms verses besides Psalm 23.
But we have to ask ourselves, do we really understand the secret place and how to reach it?
It is one thing to know the verse but it is next level to understand what it means.
We have to invite Holy Spirit in to our lives and ask him to teach us and guide us. We need revelation only Holy Spirit can give us.
So, let us begin by asking Holy Spirit to highlight things for us and to show us things only He can. We have to get out of our way, out of our flesh and say “Holy Spirit you are welcome here, have your way”.
Let's dive into a little bit of Psalms 91 first, then we will go into His Presence.
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.” (NKJV - Verses 1-2)
This is one of those verses you have to say out loud and it activates the Kingdom. Angels are then activated and sent for our protection.
Notice the verse “I will say of the Lord”.
“You who sit down in the High God's presence,
spend the night in Shaddai's shadow,
Say this: "God, you're my refuge. I trust in you and I'm safe!" (The Message Bible – Verses 1-2)
Again, this scripture tells us to say it out loud: “Say this”
The secret place is when we are in the presence of God, and it is a place we can ABIDE in.
He abides in us and we abide in Him.
It is a place not everyone will go, even though we all have access to the secret place by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus. We know the place of His presence is where strength is found.
King David knew this because of his faith and LOVE he had for the Father and he wrote this in Psalm 27:5
“For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle, He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock”.
Now God said to Moses, I want you to build me a Tabernacle that I may dwell with my people.
Dwelling with His people has always been the heart of God, to gather His people and draw them close was the dream of God. He created us to have a family. He loves us all so much and he wants to spend time with us. He wants a relationship with us and for us to come to him for everything.
When I have questions, I don’t run to my friends, I go to the Father first. I know we are to seek wise counsel so I seek Him first. He already knows how our day has gone but again, He wants to hear our version of our day.
In Exodus 25 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering. From everyone who gives it willingly with his heart you shall take My offering. 3 And this is the offering which you shall take from them: gold, silver, and bronze; 4 blue, purple, and scarlet thread, fine linen, and goats’ hair; 5 ram skins dyed red, badger skins, and acacia wood; 6 oil for the light, and spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense; 7 onyx stones, and stones to be set in the ephod and in the breastplate. 8 And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. 9 According to all that I show you, that is, the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings, just so you shall make it”.
As in everything God does, there was a message embedded in the Tabernacle. It spoke of three truths:
God wants to be near His people
Sin was a barrier, and even though God was drawing near, there remained a barrier
The ultimate solution to the sin barrier was the one who would one day take the full punishment for sin, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, and remove its division between God and man through His blood that He shed on the cross.
Even though the Tabernacle was relatively small. Its construction was a wooden frame with layers of fabric draped across. It was divided into two rooms, The Holy Place, and the Holy of Holies
Holiness means “separated” or “devoted”.
God removed His people from Egypt then He removed Egypt from His people. He wanted them to think like Him.
Worship a Holy God
Living a Holy life.
Sacrifices taught reverence for a Holy God. Exodus 1:3 Reverence means deep respect for someone or something.
If we picture Moses’ tabernacle, we would see a curtain surrounding the courtyard. It was made of white linen that symbolized the purity of God. The gate of the courtyard was purple, blue, and red fabric, and this symbolized the royalty, priestly ministry of Jesus, and His future blood sacrifice.
Moses would walk past the outer gates; he would see the brazen laver full of water the priests would symbolically wash in before going into the Tabernacle. Thus reminding them and us of a sin nature in need of cleansing. This also points us to the washing of water by the word through Jesus would make us clean in the sight of God. See God’s word is living water and we have to have it to guide us and to cleanse us.
As he entered in to his right, he would see the table of shewbread and the lamp stand, called the Holy Place. Moses would then be immediately in front of the Brazen Altar. Smoke would be rising as the priests offered sacrifices there. I can only imagine what he felt when he stood in front of the sacrifices. Knowing God knew they would sin, but still made a way for them to be cleansed.
I’m sure he noticed the pools of blood poured out at the base of the altar as he walked by. This blood would signify the blood of Jesus that would one day be poured out for the sins of the world. It is through His blood our sins are washed away.
As Moses stood there preparing to speak with God, he was bathed in the flickering light from the lamp stand that created an almost frightening atmosphere. There was no need for light in the Holy of Holies. As he waited for the presence of God to come and rest on the mercy seat above the Ark of the Covenant. Only the high priest, the Levites, once a year could step into that Holy place and atone for all the sins of the people.
Think about what this would feel like. The intense anticipation standing in the darkness knowing any moment the room would be filled with the most glorious light you had ever seen.
I believe God designed the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place like this to heighten the anticipation of His presence and to send us a message. The message is not only does God want to dwell with His people, but He wants His people to desire His presence more than anything else in their lives.
For us as believers - Jesus came to the earth to bring us into the most holy place. His atonement was “once for all”. He died, was buried, and rose again. He split the veil of separation between us and God and it opened up the presence of God, the secret place, for all who would believe and all that would enter into it.
Hebrews 9:11-12 says, “But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.”
Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need”.
This is how easy it is to enter into secret place of God (the Most Holy Place) - All you have to do is just speak His name, JESUS. If you believe with your heart then you too can walk through the veil into His presence. His heart is so close, just put your hand on your heart and you can feel it beat every time you heart beats. His presence is so close you can see the goose bumps on your arm.
His life is available to all, BUT it is a matter of faith. His secret place is just one step away through the eyes of faith as we step through the veil of His blood and sacrifice, we can sit with Him and ask Him anything we want. We can soak in His Presence and feel know that HE is our refuge and that we are safe.
